Identity Crisis: Who am I? by John Turner

11-01-2015

Ephesians 1:22-23, "God placed all things under his (Christ) feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way." In understanding this scripture it may be helpful to see Jesus standing over his enemies with his foot on their neck in a position of dominance.

Jesus' enemies are not only inferior to Christ, they are also subject to him. God's love can be found here because Christ's headship over everything is not simply for personal boasting or for a power grab, but it is for the church, the benefit of the people. God has the church in mind when placing Christ above all other powers. Even though Christ rules all things as Lord, it is only the church that has a relationship with him, described here as Christ's body. Only the church is his body and he fills it with his Spirit, grace, and spiritual gifts -- it is his fullness.

However, there is no room for boasting or self-righteousness on the part of the church because it is completely dependent on Christ. It is nothing if not for Christ.
