In the days of the prophets, being a recipient of the Word of the Lord was not always a prestigious thing. In fact, it was often a treacherous responsibility and just flat out scary. The Word of the Lord was usually a strong rebuke against a hostile, rebellious people. How would you like to be the bearer of this message?
God says to Jeremiah when Jeremiah received the Word of the Lord: "Now, I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over
nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant" (Jer. 1:9-10). That's quite the responsibility. No wonder God must constantly encourage Jeremiah not to be afraid.
John's gospel (and Luke's too) reveal Jesus as the Word. When someone receives Jesus, the Word of the Lord, into their life, it can be quite pervasive as well. Jesus has this thing about turning people's world upside down. It can even be scary because it can be difficult to live by faith. But Jesus, too, constantly encourages, "do not be afraid".
