In Luke's gospel account, Mary receives a message from an angel named Gabriel. Mary will have a child who "will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end" (Lu 1:32-33). Mary's response was COMPLETE SURRENDER:
"I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said" (Lu 1:38).
Now, normally when we think of someone surrendering we think of weakness and defeat. However, consider this: Mary and Joseph were poor Hebrews living in a Roman Empire who took advantage of folks like them. They lived under the rule of a corrupt Jewish king, Herod, who put the Roman Empire above his own people and above God. When Mary receives news that she will play a part in the coming of the Messiah who will restore the kingdom of David forever, how powerful was the white flag of Mary's surrender! By surrendering she's saying, "Let's do this!"
Likewise, when we surrender to God's will, we are not weak. Quite the opposite. When we surrender to God's will, it puts us in a position of power. "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Rom. 8:31). "The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever" (1 John 2:17).
