Virtues In Increasing Measure by John Turner

2 Peter 1:5-7 lists seven virtues Peter wants Christians to add to their faith: "Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self- control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.”

I would encourage you to take a few minutes to pray over these virtues below and make every effort to add them to your faith:

Goodness: a characteristic of those who live a life of integrity, based on the character of God.

Knowledge: the deeper matters of faith ("solid food" as opposed to "milk" -- 1 Cor. 3:2); also could mean the ability to discern God's will (see Philippians 1:9-10).

Self-control: the ability to restrain oneself from the passions and desires of the flesh (sinful nature).

Perseverance: the ability to withstand temptation, hardship, or persecution by trusting and hoping in the Lord.

Godliness: Holy living out of respect for a holy God.

Brotherly kindness: Tender feelings and loving actions among believers (Jesus spoke of these as even greater than that among one's biological family -- Lk 18:29-30).

Love: self-sacrificial beneficence towards others; listed last perhaps to indicate that all other virtues are encompassed in this one.
