Culture S.H.O.CK. by John Turner

10-23-2016

Evidenced by divorce rates, racial tensions, drug abuse, ethical failures in leadership, road rage, and so forth, our culture is one of high anxiety, especially in election years when there is more uncertainty and conflict. It is important that the Lord's Church be a place where anxiety is not a primary characteristic. Otherwise the world will not see us as a light. In 1 Peter, we find ways for the church to insulate herself from the anxiety that pervades our society. Just remember culture S-H-O-C-K: Strangers -- Live your lives as strangers here (1 Peter 1:17)

Holiness -- Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do (1 Peter 1:15)
Obedience -- As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance (1 Peter 1:14)

Crave God's Word -- Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk (1 Peter 2:2)
Karis (Greek word for Grace) -- Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1:13).
