As we are heading into a season that most associate with blessings and joy, let us not forget where those two things come from. Jesus gave this Sermon on the Mount to let His disciples, and the crowds that gathered, know who was welcome into God’s Kingdom. These ‘Beatitudes’ have helped so many over the years see that they, too, are welcome. I have loved studying this sermon from Jesus since I started reading the Bible. I always found it fascinating that the Old Testament ended with a curse (Malachi 4:6) and the New Testament starts out with blessings. The words that Jesus taught in this sermon are so needed in our world/ culture today. There are many people who are in need of God’s help (poor in spirit), who need to be shown mercy and many who hunger and thirst for righteousness. As we gather here this morning, let us not forget that we gather to be sent out. We will come in contact with people who are poor in spirit, meek, and hunger for truth. Let’s show and tell them that they are welcome right where they are at in their life.
